A hollow thud bounced along the walking path as Vance’s metal tin of chalk struck the gravel, and the echo chased a line of sparrows into the air. He crouched by a bench area near the fountain, arranging sheets for a quick sketch that his art teacher had once called "practice away from the wharf’s straight lines." Drips rang from the fountain rim, mixing with distant traffic murmurs. Cloud-shadow muffled the usual bird chorus, and a sharper wind whistled through reeds beside the pond bank. Vance hoped to catch the shifting sky on paper before darker clouds arrived; subsequently, he balanced the tin on the seat’s edge for easy reach.

The wind turned again. A rising hiss lifted one sheet, tipping the tin. Chalk sticks rattled out, clinked down the wood, and clattered onto the paving stones. That sudden percussion startled a grey squirrel clinging to a nearby plane tree; the animal launched itself toward an overhanging branch. The branch shook, releasing three acorns in quick succession. Each nut drummed on the fountain’s stone lip; the final one slid inward with a wet plop, sending a spray that spotted Vance’s half-finished sketch. The page, now speckled, curled and scraped against the bench back. The splash was an unplanned manifestation of the park’s small orchestra, and its only benefit was a new ringed pattern blooming across the pencil work.

Vance gathered the rolling chalk, but another gust rattled the plane tree leaves and promised more falling debris. The bench had been positioned by gardeners for shade, yet today that placement funneled every draft toward his seat. He wedged a folded umbrella between the bench slats and the sketchbook, forming a tilted shield. Acorns pinged against the fabric, their rhythm softer than before, while the fountain’s drumming returned to a gentler pitch. Vance kept one palm pressed over the humming tin and leaned forward, his elbow blocking fresh spray as he traced over the dampened lines.
