Drips That Replaced the Fountain-

English 原文
"Stay still, paper," Tara said. The sketchpad trembled on her knees while gravel crackled beneath a passing stroller. A thin spray from the fountain released a constant hiss, and she traced quick lines to match the rhythm. She hoped to finish one clear drawing before lunchtime, yet the first scattered raindrops tapped on the iron bench and speckled the page. The incidence of new drops on the pond created tiny hollow plops that merged with the fountain’s higher splash. Wind rattled empty cardboard boxes left after yesterday’s liquidation sale at the snack kiosk, drowning the softer water sounds. Tara slid a plastic armadillo key-ring from her pocket, placing its curved shell on a corner of the pad; the toy made a faint clack but failed to hold the sheet against the gust.
A stronger blast flipped two pages at once, and the pencil scratched unevenly across damp paper. Gazebo seats were already claimed, so she stepped beneath the roof edge where rain drummed on warped boards overhead. If she had kept chasing the fountain’s fading spray, the sheet would have remained a blotched blur of water stains. Instead she paused to scrutinize a new pattern: drops slipping from the roof met the wooden railing below with a hollow thud, then rolled to the gravel with a softer rustle. Tara began to analyze that alternating tempo, tilting the pad upright and shifting her stance to keep the page dry. The armadillo now hung from her wrist, its small shell bumping the board in time with her strokes.
Clouds moved on, yet moisture continued to trickle through a cracked shingle, and each uneven beat found space on her renewed sketch. Old paint, chipped by seasons of similar showers, framed the drawing with flakes that the wind lifted and set among her pages. She added those flakes as brief dashes, marking how time had worn the structure. Behind her, a single drop struck the wooden rail at regular intervals.
