The Bowl Beneath the Mud-

English 原文
The sharp tang of wet iron spread across the tidal flat, and a small sandpiper picked its way among shining puddles. Hazel knelt, soles sliding on the damp silt, while the bird flicked a shell from the mud and vanished toward the receding waterline. Around her, vapor lifted from pockets where sun warmed brine, a simmering ribbon of scent mixed with sweet rot from stranded kelp. Not once did she touch the barnacled plank that rose like a question from the muck. Instead, she traced dark streaks on its side where resinous sap had bled years ago and turned brittle. Each breath carried smoke-tainted salt, as though old fires still slept beneath the clay.
Several paces away, Lars stacked driftwood under the lean shadow of an abandoned crab pot. His motions bore a quiet fervor: short swings of his arm, efficient taps that knocked loose sand, then immediate return to gathering. What she noticed first was the rhythm; each piece landed at an angle, building a low foundation that kept the pale boards above the creeping moisture. There stood a broken bottle whose amber glass glimmered; Lars nudged it with his boot, letting the fragment slide downhill until momentum carried it into a shallow pool. Resin, char, and the faint odor of oil mingled when the glass met the water, rippling the mirrored sky.
Hazel eased nearer, mud breathing around her ankles, and hooked two fingers beneath a lump half-buried beside a ridge of mussels. It felt too light for stone. She paused, fingers still wet, and wiped them on her sleeve before lifting the find toward the sunlight. Only after the surface dried did a pattern appear: concentric grooves, faint yet deliberate. As though the object were an unfinished bowl, she turned it again, then hesitated; were the grooves really deliberate or simply tide-scored? The question hovered, unresolved, while brine trickled from the lip and drummed onto the plank between them. If the tide were any quicker, the mud would have swallowed the thing back.
Lars stepped closer, wiping tar from his palms. He took the piece, rapped it gently against a pebble, and a thin fleck broke away, exposing pale ceramic beneath the gray skin. What she had believed to be clay revealed glazing—sea-scoured but intact—once the outer layer fell. A low, resinous smell escaped, different from the surrounding brine, as if smoke had once curled through the vessel and stayed trapped. Her motions grew pragmatic, slow and measured, while she fetched a ribbon of kelp to cushion the shard. Their words stayed unspoken; above them, gulls circled, and the tide began inching inland. Hazel pressed the shard into the cool mud beside her boot.
