Cutlery chimed against a glass near the bar counter, the notes brief and bright. Tara balanced her open laptop on a narrow ledge, blue-grey light from the screen touching the steel rail above the stools. She wanted to devote time to one final diagram before her table was ready. An old floor plan had been loaded on her screen earlier; it had been drafted by a young builder who had explained how online tutorials helped him develop skills. The example felt valuable, so she traced lines with her fingertip, comparing angles to the silver edge of a bread plate nearby.

A server slid past, and Tara shifted her stool to give more space. The stool leg tapped a metal napkin holder; the holder rocked, then nudged a squat salt shaker. The salt shaker rolled across the smooth counter, its translucent sides catching the fluorescent cast from overhead lamps. Tara reached, but her sleeve brushed a stack of small frost-white plates. The top plate glided forward, struck the salt shaker, and nudged it faster toward the dining area’s edge. Chairs scraped somewhere behind her, adding a distant rhythm while the two objects continued their rigid dance.

Tara planted one hand flat, stopping the plate, yet the salt shaker kept moving. It reached the rubber bar mat, slowed, and wobbled toward the gap between counter and serving hatch. A passing tray corner lifted just enough to block its path; the glass on the tray trembled, but nothing spilled. Tara exhaled, slid the salt shaker back beside the napkin holder, and eased the plate onto the stack with deliberate care. She straightened her laptop, saved her notes, and swiveled her stool toward the hostess stand where a table had just cleared. A faint hiss drifted from the coffee machine.

Tara 壓住盤子，鹽罐卻仍前進。它碰到橡膠吧台墊，速度慢下來，搖搖晃晃逼近吧台與出菜口間的縫隙。路過托盤的一角剛好抬起，擋住去路；托盤上的玻璃杯抖了抖，卻沒有灑出一滴。Tara 吐氣，把鹽罐推回餐巾架旁，再把盤子歸位。她轉回筆電存檔，隨即朝候位區望去，正好空出一桌。咖啡機傳來微弱的嘶嘶聲。
