English 原文
Every dawn, Uma chalked the furnace temperature on the black slate beside the trembling water pipes. Not once did the furnace sputter during the early hours, and the board usually showed neat columns. Today, however, the chalk refused to take. A film of steam blurred the surface, so every attempt to mark down the digits dissolved into gray dew. She wiped the slate with the cuff of her sleeve, listening to the muffled creak of roof beams expanding over the heat. The faint glitch felt small, yet it echoed against stacks of ingot molds waiting in rows. Beyond the main hearth, a brass bell hung inverted, ready for its first casting after weeks of preparation.
Across the yard, Seth rehearsed a different task beneath the corrugated skylight, his boots scuffing the soot-dark floor. The apprentice turned a wooden pattern between his palms, the dry grain rasping softly. He would carry the finished piece during the unveiling planned for noon, a quiet ceremony meant to honor retired workers. If the mixture were any thinner, it would leak between the seams, he muttered under his breath, although the hiss of the quench trough swallowed his words. It was the hairline groove along the pattern’s edge that held his attention; every rotation made it shine, bathed in light seeping through dusty panes. What caught his ear, though, was the short, uneven scrape of Uma’s chalk, starting and stopping like a stuttered heartbeat.
Her gloves already warm, she lifted the slate from its hook, carried it toward the apprentice, and tilted it so the moisture slid away. Only after the droplets scattered did he raise an eyebrow, offering his pattern as a makeshift tablet. Uma paused, tracing the carved rim; an oath wound along it in raised letters no wider than a nail clipping. She hesitated—surface clean, meaning hidden—then angled the chalk again, pressing harder this time against the wood. A brittle squeal cut through the foundry when she wrote across the wooden pattern. The mark held, white against the dark grain, and silence followed the sound for a long breath. At that moment the furnace blew a deeper note, and a vibration shivered through the sand floor. The crucible’s lid shifted; a thin bloom of molten bronze seeped onto the lip—unexpected, uncontrolled, dangerous to the engraving below.
Seth darted forward, boots skidding on loose sand beside the pit, shoulder brushing a rack of tongs. The two of them braced the tongs together, sliding the pattern under a metal sheet while bronze dripped in steady taps against it. Steam swirled above the sheet; echo and hush alternated like breathing across the vaulted roof. Not until the flow finally slowed did they lean back, arms tingling from the shared exertion. It was the improvised chalk line, now blurred by heat, that linked their efforts—though neither mentioned it. The bell blanketed the yard with a low hum as cooling metal tightened inside its mold, sign of work continuing despite the hitch. Uma replaced the slate, left the pattern beside the furnace door, and wiped her wrist across the same cuff she had used earlier. Overhead, a loose shingle scraped against the gutter above, repeating the sound that had opened the morning.
