English 原文
No whistle cut through the morning din inside the north wing of the foundry. Heat shimmer swam above every anvil, and Wren steadied a canvas glove before touching the lined-up molds. She meant to organize the day’s alloy slivers by shade, yet yesterday’s scatter still clung to the bench like spilled seed. Amber light pulsed from the open furnace door, brushing her cheek with a soft scorch. Seldom had the air felt so still between the roaring chimneys, as though the place held its breath along with her. With tongs raised, she traced a faint seam along a waiting ingot, measuring whether the metal would flow cleanly this time.
Beyond the heavy doorway, a stray cat threaded past the shuttered kiosk where workers later traded coins for sweet tea. Steam from an unattended kettle drifted outward, the whistle forgotten, framing the cat’s striped back before vanishing into cooler corridors. The animal explored in cautious hops, pausing whenever a gust of damp heat spilled across the bricks. If the floor were cooler, its paws might have lingered, but the warmth pressed onward in restless waves. A loose nail clicked beneath light claws, ringing brighter than any whistle, and the sound bounced toward Wren’s station as an announcement nobody had planned.
The clang drew Wren’s gaze; her ladle wobbled, sending a ribbon of silver toward the lip of the crucible. The metal’s resilience surprised her, thickening instead of thinning, and the tilted ladle resisted every attempt at correction. Her elbow froze halfway—she set the tool down, rubbed a sleeve across her forehead, then lifted it again, slower this time. The delay allowed the stray to dart inside, settle beneath the bench, and stare at the glowing flow with unblinking curiosity. A heartbeat later, Wren noticed the distortion: a single drop had splashed onto the sand tray. It cooled into a small, unconventional swirl that caught the furnace glare and returned it as pale gold.
Ivan strode in, rolling his shoulders against the oppressive warmth, a wooden paddle balanced across his palms. The cat slipped behind his boots, and he halted mid-step, eyebrow arched at the unexpected audience. The paddle, surface already darkened by years of scorch, proved unconventional yet perfect. Together they eased the heavy ladle, guiding the alloy back into line while the cat tracked every motion. The stray’s tail flicked, stirring fine dust through the amber glow. Particles settled around the cooled swirl, which now resembled a perfect paw pressed into a quiet path. Wren’s knuckles rested on the paddle’s handle, warmth seeping through the grain and holding her in place. Between the hiss of cooling metal and the cat’s soft breathing, she stood at the threshold between quenching the mark and letting it stay.
