Jasper braced the circular glass against his palm. They crouched by a small signal lantern on the dock. Gulls looped above while ropes groaned against wet posts. Sunlight bounced off ripples and scattered bright triangles across boards. Sharp salt mixed with warm tar, drifting through the still morning air. A bloom of rust dotted the lantern’s hinge as Nell scraped. Farther out, a turtle surfaced and left widening rings between pilings.

Behind the warehouse, the sun climbed and sharpened its glare on water. Refraction along small waves sent quick points of light skittering over boards. Jasper hummed a blissful tune while easing the lens into position. A sudden flare shot through the glass and streaked onto Nell’s chart. The white stripe bleached numbers and curled the paper’s thin edge. Startled, she jerked back, and the chart slipped toward the tide line. A thin mist lifted from the surface, hanging like transparent gauze above hulls.

Nell swept her jacket forward, casting a wide shadow over the lantern. Jasper shifted sideways, adding his outline until the fierce point dimmed. The accident left a smoky crescent on the lens now fitted tight. Meanwhile, the sun kept crawling and painted longer shadows behind folded nets. Each new glare bounced between metal cleats and speckled their jackets with wavering diamonds. The turtle drifted farther, and a meadow of sea grass rippled beneath it. The smoked lens and the bleached chart lay side by side between them. Foam slapped the pilings, sending bright splashes of reflected color racing over both souvenirs.
