Mabel dipped a flat brush into thick navy paint. She dragged the loaded bristles across the fishing boat's hull. Kent steadied the paint tray on the rocking pier. Small waves lapped beneath them, tapping the wooden posts. From the open harbor studio, linseed and salt mixed in the air. Mabel has lived by the harbor for years, and the smell never changed. The viscous paint formed slow beads that dripped toward the water. Their routine of striping boats had filled many mornings. The teamwork between them showed in every matching stroke. Every stripe today demanded an artist's steady hand.

The tide began to rise, adding fresh lift to the hull. Each new pulse pressed the boat upward, then let it drop. Paint spread wider than intended, pushed by the slow movement. Mabel bent her knees and shortened her reach. Kent slid one foot back, lowering the tray by a finger. They kept working, brushes gliding in rhythm with the rolling deck. A gull cried overhead, and tarred ropes creaked beside their elbows.

Without warning, a gust swept a pale wildflower along the planks. The petal cluster landed in the tray and vanished under the paint. Swirls of soft yellow spiraled through the navy like hidden shoals. Kent fished the stem out; a thin ribbon of color remained. They exchanged a quick grin and traced the ribbon into the stripe. A loose rope began to twirl beside Mabel's boot, stirred by breeze. She shifted one step left, and the brush met fresh wood again. Soon the stripe reached the bow, neat despite the drifting platform. Mabel pressed the lid onto the paint can. Kent hung both brushes on the hook beside the cabin door.
