English 原文
Tar and seaweed mixed in the air around the repair pier, giving every breath a sharp, briny bite. Mae reached the iron winch that held a faded supply float at the end of a thick cable. The float drifted near the pile wall, rocking with each slap of the tide. A stiff gear wheel on the winch refused to turn, though the tide kept tugging. Eli crouched beside her, and damp wood creaked under his boots. Years of learning simple machines in the small harbor workshop gave them confidence, yet the weight of wet rope and the pull of water worked against their first effort.
Eli tried to spin the hand crank, but rust locked the cog teeth. The wheel only rocked, then stopped. At the same moment, the tide lifted the float higher, adding strain and making the cable bite deeper into its drum. Two forces—rising water and frozen metal—held the line in a stubborn standoff. Mae pinched a scrap of canvas between her palms for extra grip, then twisted the crank back and forth in short bursts. The motion cracked the rust layer little by little. She shifted her stance, braced one knee against the post, and the gear finally inched forward, though its groan echoed across nearby hulls.
The crank began to whirl more freely, yet fresh resistance appeared: the cable tried to coil unevenly, threatening to jam. Eli fed the slack by hand, guiding each loop into a tidy spiral around the drum. Cold spray dotted their sleeves, and pale morning light shimmered across the oily water, streaking silver lines through the green reflection of a distant forest beyond the inlet. Mae wondered whether the cable would bite her glove, but eventually the load evened out and the float rose clear of the tide. They stopped together, cheeks flushed from effort. Two oily handprints smeared the rim of the gear beside them. Waves slapped against the pier pylons below.
