When the Strap Whipped Free- 適合中級的英語短篇故事

Three meters beyond the yellow safety line stood a luggage trolley. Its rubber straps pulled taut across a narrow wooden crate. Hana knelt beside it, testing each strap by hand. The crate held several printed art maps inside. She planned to trade them for an old station poster. The seller, a travelling vendor who regularly toured small stops, had promised a fair bargain. Thin sunlight striped the tiles, and warm air shimmered above the metal rails. While Hana waited, porters on the far side of the platform rolled a low parcel cart. It moved slowly along a short steel rail. Coil springs under the cart flexed at every pothole. Each heavy box made the deck sag, then bounce back. Farther up, a canvas awning stretched between iron poles. Its edges stayed tight under cords that hummed whenever the midday train rumbled past.

When the porters dropped a long tube, one spring compressed harder than the others. The sudden force shot the cart sideways quickly. Its front corner hooked the trolley’s lowest strap. The strap stretched like a giant sling, then snapped free, hurling Hana’s rolled invitation toward the timetable board. The light tube struck the humming awning and pushed its edge down. The cloth rebounded, flicking the tube back across the gap. It landed on the parcel cart and rolled between two boxes. The roll forced them apart, and the top box slid toward Hana. She braced one foot, caught the box, and used its weight to pull the trolley closer. The stray strap hung loose, but the crate stayed closed. The porters steadied their cart and continued loading, now with an extra roll resting between parcels. Hana retied the rubber strap across her crate and tucked the recovered invitation under it. A distant whistle echoed above the platform boards.

搬運工掉下一支長筒時，其中一根彈簧壓得特別深，猛然把包裹車推向側邊，前角勾住了推車最下方的束帶。束帶像巨大的投石器般拉長後猛然彈開，把哈娜捲好的請帖射向時刻表板。輕筒碰上嗡鳴的雨棚，把棚邊壓低，帆布反彈，又把筒子掀回月台間隙。它落在包裹車上，滾入兩個箱子之間，迫使它們分開，上方那箱朝哈娜滑來。她單腳撐住地面，接住箱子，並利用重量把推車拉近。鬆脫的束帶垂下，但木箱仍緊閉。搬運工扶穩車子，繼續裝載，多了一支筒子夾在包裹中。哈娜重新綁好橡膠束帶，把撿回的請帖塞進束帶下。一聲悠長汽笛在月台上方迴盪。
