Glare Bent into Shadow- 適合中級的英語短篇故事

“Bring the small mirror here.”

Max stepped across the wet plank and wiped salt from the glass. Strong midday glare bounced off the harbor water and broke into hard white specks that danced over the shed wall. A narrow shelf inside the doorway hid a brass compass whose fading numbers interested Luke, yet a deep shadow wrapped the shelf like cloth. Ambition towered nearby as an unfinished racing mast, its varnish layers showing perseverance against years of sun. Even the welcome breeze carried considerable brightness, driving narrow reflections through every crack.

Luke first cupped his palm around the compass, hoping his body would block the glare. The shadow only thickened, and the numbers stayed invisible. While he frowned, a glimmer slid across Max’s mirror and briefly painted the compass rim silver. Luke noticed the moment. He twisted a loose tin sheet, propped it against a coil basket, and angled its dull face toward the mirror. One deliberate tilt turned the glare back inside, a redirected blade of light that sliced through the darkness and filled the shelf. The numbers glowed green, revealed at last, but the beam kept traveling. It jumped again, struck a stack of colored glass floats, and scattered ribbons of emerald and ruby across two moored dinghies. Gulls wheeled through the sudden patches of color, their wings cutting moving silhouettes against the bright pattern.

Luke’s mirror and Max’s tin sheet still crossed their beams on the back wall. Ripples on the water kept the joined light trembling in a thin, shifting X.

「把那面小鏡子拿過來。」

馬克斯跨過濕滑的木板，把鹽跡從鏡面抹去。正午強烈的耀光從港水反射，化成一粒粒刺眼白點，在修船棚的牆上跳動。門口裡的一層窄架子上放著一個黃銅羅盤，其黯淡的刻度吸引路克，但濃濃陰影像布一樣裹住了架子。旁邊那根尚未完工的賽艇桅杆高高豎立，像是具現的「抱負」，而層層清漆在多年的日光下仍展現「毅力」。甚至那陣「受歡迎」的微風也帶來了「相當」耀眼的光，透過每條縫隙投出細長反射。

路克先用手掌罩住羅盤，想阻擋耀光，但陰影反而更濃，刻度依舊看不見。他皺眉時，一道微光滑過馬克斯的鏡面，短暫地把羅盤邊緣染成銀色，路克捕捉到了這一刻。他把一片鬆動的錫片轉向一個繩籃，支撐好，然後精準地把它面向鏡子。只需一次刻意的傾斜，刺眼光芒被導回棚內，如利刃般切開黑暗，整個架子亮起。數字終於顯出碧綠，但光束繼續前行，跳到一疊彩色玻璃浮球上，又向外散開，綠與紅的光帶劃過兩艘繫泊的小艇。海鷗掠過突如其來的彩斑，翅膀剪出移動的剪影。

路克的鏡面與馬克斯的錫片仍在後牆上交叉出兩道光束。水面微波不斷，讓那細而移動的 X 形光紋持續顫動。
