The blue diode of an energy-saving bulb hummed above the stairwell hatch, drawing thin turquoise stripes across the flat roof. Lily crouched beside two light foam panels, keen to prop them into a small shade box for seedlings. A neighbour had left extra springy cables to help out, so she twisted one hook through an eye bolt and stretched the cord until it sang. The glossy surface of each panel showed her quick pencil marks and a few handwritten energy-saving tips, none complete yet.

Taut rubber met warm sun, and the cord’s interaction with the slick metal eye grew slippery. Lily angled a second panel, and the first cord recoiled without warning. The rebound slapped the panel upright, which pinched a rain bucket near her knee. Water leapt out, bounced off the tar, and raced toward a coiled extension lead under the bulb. The surge lifted the thin wire, swinging the lamp so hard that its casing tapped the rail. Tiny awareness sensors along that rail blinked in confusion as drops struck them. Lily darted forward, wedged a spare foam scrap under the sliding bucket, then threaded a fresh cord through both panels, balancing their pull against the rail. The chain of jolts slowed; the bulb still swayed, but the water pooled safely against the foam barrier.

She wiped her palms on her jeans and noticed the lamp’s glow flicker over a bright shape above the next building. She turned from the half-finished panels and watched a red paper kite wheel higher while a gull flapped hard beneath it.

她把掌心在牛仔褲上抹乾，注意到燈光在隔棟上方照出一抹鮮紅身影。她轉開目光，看著紙鳶在空中繞升，而海鷗在其下拍翅奮飛。
