A tin basin of thick varnish waited on the tabletop, and a narrow brush lay across its rim. Rosa bent over the board she wanted to coat. Rainwater slipped through the cracked glass, dripped onto the varnish, and formed pale circles that widened each time a new drop landed. Viscous liquid pushed outward, while fresh water pressed downward, whipping the surface into slow swirls that threatened to spill.

Rosa gripped the basin and tried to tilt it just enough to keep the rain out. The varnish clung to the metal like honey, refusing to move. She folded a piece of canvas, wedged it under one edge of the basin, and gained a thin slope. The heavier side began to pour in a steady ribbon toward the board, yet the falling drops still pecked at the surface and broke the stream into bubbles. Kindness showed in the rounded corners of the old table; someone long ago had sanded them smooth so sleeves could glide without snagging. A single pink petal, carried from the back garden on Rosa’s shoe, floated across the varnish. Surprise arrived when the oily swirl caught the petal and spun it into a tiny whirlpool of color.

Rosa leaned back, letting the mixture settle where it landed on the board. She wiped her hands on the rag and stepped aside. Raindrops slowed, became occasional taps, and then silence held the room.
