A timer bell rang twice beside the brick oven. Yeasty steam met a ribbon of warm cinnamon, rolling through the humid air. Vera's nephew, Jasper, lifted a clear glass honey jar from the open-air window ledge where warm sunlight poured in. The beam bent through the thick amber, landing as a striking gold patch on the flour-dusted table. Jasper turned the jar just a little. The patch stretched, brighter at the centre, and a fine border of shadow framed it. Curious, Vera fetched another jar, this one half-filled with raspberry syrup that she had kept for glaze. She placed it next to the first; red light overlapped the gold, and the mixed colours rippled over a cooling loaf. A metal tackle box, forgotten under the shelf, became their stand. They balanced both jars on its flat lid and watched the colours drift whenever the oven door opened.

Jasper repeated the motion, slowing his hands each time to test new angles. Refraction sharpened, then split; tiny rainbows scattered across the tiled wall. One rainbow slid across the silver scales printed on his apron, and for an instant it shaped a thin snout that looked like a barracuda. He gasped, tilted the jar again, and the fish-like silhouette darted upward onto a rack of cooling croissants. Vera laughed and nudged a third jar of clear water into place. The added lens flipped every colour upside down, sending a web of light toward the ceiling. Shadows from hanging ladles crossed the web and formed lattice patterns that shimmered above the oven mouth. Clouds outside shifted, and the direct beam widened, flooding the bakery in restless ribbons. Sunlight crept beyond the jars, climbed the sacks of flour, and kept sliding toward the back wall.
