Erik eased onto the narrow cellar steps, and each tread dipped a little lower than the one before. Gwen followed, her shoulder brushing a wardrobe that leaned away from the damp brick wall. Their goal, a brass lamp stored years earlier, perched on the highest shelf. At the same moment, the tilting wardrobe pressed toward them while the step beneath Erik began to wobble, so gravity tugged from two directions.

A faint bulb revealed an ensemble of mismatched furniture piled like cards ready to topple. Between a squeaky desk and a cracked chest, a woven picnic basket lay open. Erik squeezed past the desk, lifted the basket’s flat lid, and propped it between the wardrobe and a ceiling beam. The lid bowed, but it slowed the wardrobe’s tilt just enough. With one threat held back, Gwen planted a wooden crate under the shelf—its corners scraped the floor yet offered a shaky foothold. She climbed, knees shaking, and reached upward, but the step stool trapped between her heel and the crate began to teeter.

The basket lid groaned as its reed strands splintered. Erik braced both palms against it, and the lid bent further, small fibers curling away like straw. Gwen stretched again, fingertips brushing the cold metal lamp, but a final crack split the lid’s edge. The wardrobe lurched forward a finger’s width, forcing them to pause. Gwen hopped down, and the crate listed to one side. The lamp remained exactly where it started, glinting above their heads. Strips from the broken lid stuck to the beam, and fine dust kept drifting through the beam of light.
