Joy slid a damp, mossy leaf toward Felix and wiped her ink-stained palms on her apron. The press lever stood upright, its steel spring packed with quiet tension. Felix laid the leaf on a fresh sheet, pressed the rubber roller across it, and watched the surface flex, rebound, then flex again before lying flat. When Joy pulled the lever, the heavy frame dropped, compressed the leaf, and sprang back with a soft thrum. A green smear appeared, lighter at the veins, darker at the stem. They exchanged a quick nod and lifted the first print to the drying rack.

Felix turned the leaf sideways, spread the edges wider, and pressed again. This time the veins curved like tiny roads, and the surrounding blotches framed them. A sudden burst of birdsong drifted through the high window where a lone gull balanced on the sill, its wing tips twitching. Joy glanced up, grabbed a loose feather it had left behind, and set the feather beside the leaf. The roller bent the quill, then let it spring free, leaving bright ridges beside the earlier stain. They repeated the motion once more, shifting the feather lower; the overlapping marks joined into a tall, blocky shape that resembled a distant monument hiding in mist. Joy lifted the sheet, and wet ink glimmered under the lamps. Three sheets hung on the drying line, each bearing their layered pattern. Ink kept gleaming across the paper while the press arm hovered above.

フェリックスは葉を横向きにし、端をさらに広げ、もう一度プレスした。今度は葉脈が小さな道のように湾曲し、周囲の染みがそれを縁取った。高い窓から突然、鳥のさえずりが響き、カモメが窓枠でバランスを取りながら翼の先を小さく震わせていた。ジョイは見上げ、鳥が残した一本の羽をつかみ、葉のそばに置いた。ローラーは羽軸を曲げ、それが跳ね返ると同時に、先ほどの染みに明るい筋を残した。さらに一度動作を繰り返し、羽を下にずらすと、重なり合った跡が霧の中に隠れた遠い記念碑のような背の高い形になった。ジョイが紙を持ち上げると、湿ったインクがランプの下で輝いた。三枚の紙が乾燥用ロープに並び、重ねられた模様を見せていた。プレスのアームが宙で止まるあいだも、インクは紙の上で光を放ち続けた。
