When the Grains Jumped-

English 原文
The cork sheet under Pearl’s hand felt spongy after hours of quiet work. Dust had gathered in the narrow grooves around the window latch, proof that spring already lingered outside the lab.
She aimed a small microphone toward a tin plate, then shook a handful of dry rice across its center. Each grain landed with a bright rattle, and she tapped the rim in a steady rhythm, hoping the recorder would catch every vibration. A low fan in the ceiling answered with its own hum; the pitch shifted whenever the loose belt skimmed metal. For two minutes these lines of sound lived apart: her crisp taps below, the drone above. The sudden encounter arrived when both tones matched for a breath. Resonance rolled along the shelf, and the tin plate trembled. Rice popped up, bounced away, and struck a clear box where a dragonfly nymph climbed over wet reeds. Inside another jar, garden snails pressed around lettuce in a slow evening feast, their shells knocking glass with irregular clicks.
Pearl slid the microphone closer, but the fan’s wobble grew louder and drowned the softer echoes. She changed strategy, sliding felt pads under the plate to muffle the shake; the drone simply wrapped around the padding and continued. More rice spilled, tracing tiny white arcs across the chart paper that waited for clean data. She unplugged the microphone, leaving faint scratch lines on the paper graph below. The fan kept humming above the scattered grains.
