Sand Against the Spray-

English 原文
A gray sparrow hopped along the fountain rim, pushing loose sand ahead of its claws. Noon light flashed on the water jets, and cool mist landed across the warm stone. Years of erosion had ground the inner edge smooth, leaving flour-fine dust that glided with every step. Between the wet splashes lay a small pile of dried kale flakes, bright and brittle like green confetti. The bird darted toward them, yet each gust from the nearest jet scattered the pieces outward. Some fragments drifted into the basin, others slid over the round lip and vanished. The sparrow pecked once, missed, and then wound its narrow body lower, wings partly spread for balance. Spray kept knocking the food aside, while the sliding dust flowed toward the water in a steady trickle.
Beside the fountain, a veterinarian sat on a bench with a half-open lunch bag. A tear in the paper let grain treats fall and gather in tiny dunes near the sparrow’s feet. The bird jabbed at one dune and felt it crumble, then paused. Sand still steadily streamed downhill toward the jet. The sparrow kicked a broad sweep and folded grains with dust. Together they built a thick ridge along the rim. The next burst of water struck the ridge. Instead of spraying the food, the splash hurled damp sand toward the pool. The bright kale flakes finally stayed in one place. The same spray soaked a ledge and slid a pebble into the notebook on her lap. Mist slowly thinned above the new rearranged ridge. A coin rolled through a shallow puddle and stopped against the damp pebble.
