A quick insight came when Cruz spotted a rusty tin notice board fallen beside the flower beds. He yanked it free, tilted it over their heads, and the broad sheet blocked most of the drainpipe’s pressure. Water hammered the metal; brown flakes floated away and drifted into the purple syrup below. With the pipe shielded, Sara stepped through the sticky current, boots pushing ripples that carried bubbles toward the track edge. She perched the lamp on a low stone ledge; dye-stained water still lapped at her soles, yet the lantern stayed dry. The tin board bent under the flow, edges curling until one corner cracked and sagged. Together they nudged the warped shield aside, letting it slump against the bench where paint already flaked. Rusty droplets from the board dotted both jackets in a dark line. Two orange smears ran parallel down the station tiles, one from Sara’s boots, the other from Cruz’s soaked heel.
