Cool mist speckled Suki's wrist, and the stone rim felt rough against her skin. She balanced a flaky croissant on a napkin beside her while morning light scattered across the fountain. Between dancing jets, a round wax seal slipped from the napkin and drifted over the shallow water. Its red surface shone like a tiny mirror. Suki leaned forward, but a bright glare bounced from the wet marble, hiding the seal under streaks of white. At the same moment, spray from the highest jet cast a moving shadow that blurred every outline. Two opposite patches of light fought across the basin, and her eyes narrowed. She hoped to spot the seal before it sank between coins that had already lined the floor.

She twisted her knees against the rim and folded her sleeve above the elbow. The glare returned, so she waited until a drifting cloud dimmed the marble. When the light softened, the seal appeared again, floating just beyond her fingers. She pinched its edge, but spray struck the surface; new ripples broke the reflection into streaks, and the seal slipped away. Her hand trembled from the cold water, yet she adjusted her angle, lowering her wrist until the sun struck from behind her shoulder. The change removed the glare while the shadow fell farther back. Colored arcs from the jets refracted around her arm, and a thin rainbow curled across the splash. Under that sudden band of color, the wax seal finally touched her palm. She lifted it, let excess water drip, and placed it beside the undisturbed croissant. Sunlight thinned through the last drift of mist. Ripples smoothed around the fountain tiles.
