The shelf slot for tinned peaches showed a dull rectangle where dust met metal. Luna rose on her toes, peering between stacked corn cans, and had already searched three aisles for the fruit. The bakery counter’s dark granite surface reflected strips of white light and carried the faint smell of warming bread. A distant cooler vent produced a wavering whirr that rose and faded, like waves brushing a hollow hull. Soft brushing of jackets hissed through the produce section, while velvety peach scent mingled with the colder current from overhead vents. She pushed her cart forward, its front wheel squealing against smooth tiles toward the humming freezer corridor.

Luna spotted a single carton of peach halves balanced high on a tilted freezer rack. She braced one sneaker on the lower guard rail and stretched until her fingertips pinched the corner of cardboard. The carton slipped, bumped a row of syrup jars, and each jar tapped the next down the line. A plastic scoop, loosened by the vibration, slid off the lip and clanged on the steel shelf below. The scoop’s impact jolted a column of soup tins; two tins toppled and rolled across tiles with hollow echoes. A brief symphony of rattles, dings, and skittering metal spread along the refrigerated corridor, turning several heads nearby.

One spinning tin curved toward the open aisle, yet the freezer door swung inward for its timed defrost cycle and blocked it. The tin struck the rubber seal, chimed once, and halted beside Luna’s shoe. She climbed down, cradled the dented piece, and turned it until only a fraction of the wrinkled label could be read. No other peaches waited behind the jars, so she slipped the lone can into the basket and steered toward self-checkout. The aisle’s layered hum persisted, and the freezer door kept swinging in slow pulses against the quieting row of shelves.

其中一個旋轉的罐頭朝開放走道滑去，然而冷凍門正巧為除霜計時向內擺動，把它攔下。罐頭撞上橡膠封條，叮一聲後停在露娜鞋邊。她爬下護欄，小心托住那略微凹陷的罐頭，轉動它，只有皺折標籤的一小部分還看得清。玻璃罐後面沒有其他桃子，她便把這唯一的罐頭放進籃子，推車朝自助結帳區滑去。走道裡層層疊疊的嗡鳴仍在延續，而冷凍門以緩慢的節奏持續來回擺動，與逐漸安靜的貨架相互呼應。
