The thin squeal of the plastic-bag spool cut through the steady hum of the mist nozzles as Dina tugged a fresh bag free. Fluorescent light bounced off the steel scale, spreading a pale blue aura across the damp floor tiles. Her grandfather compared the smooth curvature of two cucumbers, while a sparrow perched on the frame above the lettuces, its claws gripping the rail like tiny hooks. A velvety layer of peach fuzz brushed Dina’s wrist when she shifted her basket, a small reminder that the stone fruit display sat unguarded behind her.

The spool’s second squeal startled the sparrow. The bird shot forward, wings clipping a price card and sending it spinning. Below, a leashed terrier near the bakery felt the flutter above its head; the dog jerked sideways, wheels on its owner’s cart skidding over a damp patch. The front wheel locked against a floor seam, and the jogging cart nudged the peach pyramid. Spheres rolled in every direction, tapping glass, rattling against metal legs. Dina lunged, planting her basket as a barrier; several peaches thumped the wicker and stopped. Others spiralled under the cold draft from the freezer section before losing speed beside frozen-aisle tiles.

She had gathered the loose fruit quickly, yet pale moisture already coated their skins. While her grandfather rearranged the top layer, Dina returned to the produce bags. The spool that had been full now rocked on its axle, paper core showing through as it revolved in a slow, uneven circle toward the floor.

她很快把散落的果實撿回，但淡淡的水氣已經覆在果皮上。祖父重新堆好最上層時，迪娜走回塑膠袋區。那個原本滿滿的捲軸現在在軸心上搖晃，紙芯已經顯露，並在地面方向慢慢、不規則地旋轉著。
