English 原文
Whirring filled the corridor outside the meeting room as the office printer swallowed page after page. The buzz of its rollers mingled with distant keyboard tapping and created a steady pulse. Pearl prided herself on starting each briefing with bright charts, so she waited for the final sheet, tapping her pen in time with the rhythm. A sudden grind broke the pattern; paper scuffed against metal, then the hum stopped altogether. She had already loaded new sheets, yet the feed tray held them in a crooked, silent grip. Somewhere behind her, the air duct hissed, and the fluorescents gave a flat drone, but the gap where the printer’s voice should be stayed empty. Pearl reached for the jam lever, hoping the pause was minor.
One tug produced a rasp, then the trapped sheet tore free with a dry rip that rolled down the corridor. The sudden release tipped the output tray; a stack of sample leaflets slid, knocking a bronze paperweight shaped like a fox. The fox clanged against a ceramic mug painted with a glossy jackdaw, and the mug wobbled before tipping. Its bittersweet coffee splashed onto the polished table, droplets pattering like quick rain. Liquid ran along lined folders that had been filed in neat hierarchical structure, largest binders at the bottom, slim briefs on top. The folders shuffled, and a thin report skated off the edge, thudding onto the carpet. Coffee trickled after it, dripping through the plastic cable guard toward the projector’s power strip.
By the time Pearl lunged forward, a faint sizzle came from the strip; the projector, which had been prepared by Rosa earlier that morning, flickered and fell silent. Pearl yanked the plug, and the heated plastic crackled as current died. She slid a binder under the leaking mug, muffling the drip, then pressed the fox paperweight against the tilted tray to keep new pages from gliding. The chain of bumps eased, but the corridor still carried scattered noises: the distant murmur of phones, the rhythmic rattle of the air vent, and beneath the meeting table, a single drop continued its slow descent into the carpet.
