A short brass rod had been jammed halfway into the keyhole of the wooden cupboard beside the return cart. Its rim felt gritty, as though sand had rubbed against the soft metal before someone forced it in.

Ruby traced the cupboard’s scarred surface. Carpet muffled each shuffle from distant patrons while air vents pushed a steady indoor gale across the bookshelf aisles, ruffling loose book jackets. The orange library cat prowled the narrow alley between atlas shelves, whiskers brushing the volumes. Ruby pressed her thumb against the rod and tried to twist. The metal barely moved, only warming under her skin. She wiped her hand on her cotton skirt, reached into her tote, and pulled out the paper sachet that still held three oily olives from lunch. A thin layer of brine clung to her fingertips; using the moisture as makeshift lubricant, she gripped the rod again. It slid one finger-width farther yet stopped against unseen grit.

Closing-time lights dimmed over the study corner. Ruby stooped, spotted a thin seam around the rod, and chose to draw, not turn. The piece slipped free with a faint rasp and revealed a tiny cavity behind it. What had looked like a key shank proved to be a hollow whistle; its mouthpiece had been concealed inside the lock face. The cat leapt onto the reading table, ears angled toward the new object. Ruby pressed the whistle to her palm; its surface carried parallel ridges that caught the last warm air from the vents. She blew once—no sound emerged—but a curled paper scroll loosened inside the cupboard and dropped to the floor. Ink had bled long ago, leaving only blurred lines; whatever message existed was already lost. Ruby glanced at the silent doorway, then tucked the whistle beside the empty olive pouch. She slid the delicate scroll into the return cart’s lowest tray.
