Petals Left After the Train-

English 原文
"The timetable slipped again." Tess steadied the curled sheet against the glass noticeboard. Damp paper smell mingled with diesel breath rising from the idling coach beside the shelter. At her ankle, Patch, a speckled terrier, licked a chocolaty puddle that left a bitter tang in the air. Tess had planned to peruse the worn schedule for a city-bound train, yet drizzle-softened ink floated into blue clouds. Beyond the shelter’s roof, children played leapfrog over striped suitcases; each jump kicked up gusts carrying rubbery brake odor toward the platform edge.
Tess nudged Patch toward the footbridge. A yeasty pastry aroma drifted from the kiosk below the soot-dark keystone of the archway, mixing with sharp metal humidity from handrails warmed by bodies. Halfway up, Patch jerked sideways, drawn by pepper-sweet onion steam curling from a snack cart; the lead twisted around Tess’s wrist. She crouched, slipped her hand free, then hugged the rail, matching the bridge’s vibration as engines idled beneath. At the platform the doors met; inside, a chime rang with the crisp twang of an old doorbell. The train rolled off, leaving scorched-rubber taste hanging in Tess’s throat while gritty exhaust dusted her coat.
Fresh silence drifted over the concrete strip. A porter passed, balancing a bucket of blazing dahlias; one bright head dropped, landing beside Patch. Honeyed petal scent cut through lingering diesel, and Tess looped the stem into the dog’s collar before turning toward the waiting room, planning another attempt after the next listed time. Hours later, long after broadcast echoes faded and fryer grease cooled to a waxy film, the platform stood empty. The single dahlia lay beside a crumpled gum wrapper, petals speckled with soot. Engine haze thinned above the rails, and the timetable sheet clung to the noticeboard, its edges curled like cooled peelings.
