English 原文
The sharp tang of damp oak pressed against Nora’s face as she unlatched the low door and stepped into her family’s wine cellar. Seldom had the coolness felt so steady; it skimmed across her skin after the humid trek from the garden path where a brief squall had spattered mud up her boots. Shelves she could trace in the dark still lined the stone, yet the faint sweetness in the air hinted that another summer had seeped into the barrels while she was away.
A stub of beeswax waited on the worktable. Flint brushed steel; the tiny spark dared to ignite the wick, and warmth gathered around her knuckles. Only when the flame held did she hasten forward, letting the glow pass over hoops of rusted iron and corks pushed slightly deeper than she remembered. If the largest vat were any lighter, she might have rolled it herself, yet its stony cold suggested stubborn fullness. Culinary experiments from the kitchen above once trickled down in ladles for testing, but tonight the ladle hook lay empty, its brass dulled to brown.
Hardly had she reached the back wall when a new line caught the firelight: the chalk tally her grandfather kept now faded into near invisibility, strokes thinned to ghosts. Below, a darker stain curved where wine must have wept and dried again and again, each layer thin as parchment. Nora lifted a rag, paused, then folded it back; the cellar carried its own memory, and she would not scrub that away. Her breath left a brief cloud that drifted toward the racks before thinning in the chill.
The candle wavered as she knelt between two barrels, curiosity guiding her thumb along the mortar. There, beneath decades of dust, lay a shallow carving—a cluster of grapes no larger than a coin, edges softened by time. It must always have been part of the wall, yet the mark had blended with shadow until the shifting flame named its curves. Fingers still tingling from cold, she traced the motif once, then blew out the candle. Darkness returned, thicker than before, but the image glimmered in her mind, brighter than the flame had ever been. Cool air followed her up the stairs, brushing the newly uncovered carving with a silent swirl of dust.
