Condensation marked her sleeves, sliding from pane to pane like slow beads of mercury. What struck her first was accumulation: fine droplets from a valve above dripped in a steady rhythm onto the path, darkening the soil with overlapping circles. Hardly had she set the can down when a faint tremor rippled along the iron infrastructure, chiming every hanging pot for a breath and leaving the panes humming. She glanced at the valve again; each new circle swallowed the previous one.

Two metres away, a land snail with a quintessential nautilus curve traced a silver line across a cracked cement slab. Light refracted through damp air and painted amber bands along its shell, making the spiral shimmer as though turning inside out. Beside the creature lay broken shards from yesterday’s planting tray, stacked without care. The snail climbed one shard, paused, then slid back, its antennae furling and unfolding while the trail behind it thickened. Little by little, the silver widened, and Nora’s eyes kept returning to the growing ribbon even as water from the faulty valve spattered in the background.

She fetched a short spanner from the tool rack, intending to stop the leak before midday heat built. The nut above her shoulder refused to move; moisture had bound metal to metal. If the joint were any looser, the whole line would spray, yet nothing yielded under steady pressure. A sudden jolt—perhaps a delivery truck passing the outer road—shivered the sash window; droplets leapt sideways and dampened her collar. Hands still wet, she backed off and wiped her palms on her trousers, then looked toward the snail. Its ribbon now touched the puddle spreading from the valve, softening the dust into a mirror that echoed the spiral.

Nora hesitated, then pressed a planting wedge beneath the pipe, changing the angle so the thread might release. As she leaned, her boot nudged the shard the snail had climbed. The fragile edge snapped; half the spiral skidded into the puddle, breaking the mirrored curve. Seldom had silence inside the glasshouse felt so heavy. With one more steady pull, the nut creaked and turned, and the leak fell to a slow tap. Water pooled around the broken shell segment; the snail continued forward, navigating around the missing arc. Half of the spiral lay chipped beside the tightened valve, catching a thin band of afternoon glare.

她從工具架拿起短板手，打算在正午前止漏。肩上方的螺帽死緊不動；水氣使金屬相黏。假如這條接縫再鬆一點，整條管線恐怕會四處噴水，但持續用力也毫無進展。突然一道震動——大概是外頭運貨車經過——使氣窗抖動；水滴斜濺到她領口。她退開，雙手在褲子上抹乾，看向蝸牛。它的銀線已連到活栓下擴散的水窪，將塵土泡成一面映出螺旋的鏡子。
