From the doorway Zara watched Bram crouch beneath the shaft, lamplight playing on his shoulders while the wheel outside drummed its endless pulse. Warm vapor drifted from the grain dryer, yet a fine chill clung to the damp stones near her boots. Above, flour dust hovered like pale smoke, never quite touching the beams. Somewhere in that muffled mix of warmth and cool, the axle groaned—an uneven soliloquy no audience had requested—so she lingered, counting each creak as though it might explain the imbalance.

Rarely had the mill felt so divided by temperature: one half tasted of oven-heat, the other of river mist. Zara crossed the floor and touched a sack; condensation flecked the cloth. A restless pigeon fluttered under the rafters, scattering dust that sparkled briefly, then vanished into the draft. The warped vent over the furnace offered a clear quandary—wedge it wider for more fire, or close it before the grain scorched. She loosened the rope, paused, and tightened it again, her sleeve growing hot while her fingertips tingled with cold air spilling through the cracks. No sooner had she chosen to wait than a louder splash answered from outside, the river sounding almost like revelry rather than work.

His boots dripping, Bram hurried in from the open pavilion that bridged the wheel, water beading on his hair. "The sluice gate sticks," he said, though his words trailed into the roar. Together they leaned on the swollen lever; wood groaned, but the gate refused to rise. If the plank were any lighter, their combined push would have lifted it easily. Heavy water pressed back until, with a muted shudder, the gate lurched, and a surge burst through, skimming across the floor in a thin sheet that hissed against the iron stove. Steam spiraled upward, erasing the chilly pockets overhead, and for a breath both of them stood motionless, surprised by how quickly warmth obeyed the sudden flood.

Only when the steam thinned did Zara tug one corner of a grain sack, and Bram mirrored her, heaving it onto a higher beam where the renewed heat might dry it evenly. Nowhere along the shadowed rafters could she spot the pigeon; even its tiny claws had found calmer timber. The lever, dark with river water, lay at a gentler angle, and the mixed air inside the mill evened into a comfortable hush. Outside, the wheel kept turning, and water hissed against the dark boards.

布藍姆的靴子淌水，他從連接水輪的開放式走廊衝進來，髮梢掛著水珠。「閘門卡住了。」他半吞字句，但轟鳴掩過一切。他們並肩對著膨脹的木柄用力；木板咯啞，但閘門仍不上升。若木柄再輕些，他們合力便能抬起。沉水回推，忽而一震，閘門晃開，河水薄片般掠過地面，嘶嘶撲向鐵爐。蒸汽旋上，瞬間抹平上空寒意，兩人愣立，被暖流乍現的速度驚到。

蒸汽變淡後，薩拉拉起一角麻袋，布藍姆隨之，用力擺上較高的橫梁，讓重新平衡的熱氣均勻烘乾。昏暗樑間再無鴿影；連那微小的爪子也找到了更安穩的木頭。沾著河水的扳柄斜度柔和，磨坊內的混合空氣漸成宜人靜息。外頭，水輪照舊轉動，河水拍擊暗色木板發出細響。
