English 原文

Nora eased the shop door inward, elbow nudging aside a dangling chain of spare keys. She landed in a shallow pool of amber light spread across the concrete floor. Rarely had the fluorescent strip above the workbench thrown such a narrow, theatrical beam, yet every dust mote floated through it like an actor waiting for a cue. The familiar smell of machine oil mingled with something faintly sweet, as though a forgotten culinary experiment had cooled nearby. She slid her toolbox onto the counter and, without looking, brushed metal shavings toward the bin the way a pianist finds the opening chord.

Only when she reached for the cast-iron cauldron that usually hung beside the radio did her rhythm falter. The hook dangled empty, turning gently in the warm updraft from the bench lamp, and a faint semicircle of dust on the shelf marked the vessel’s former outline. She crouched, running two fingers along the floor until flakes of soot stained her skin; the cauldron had been dragged rather than lifted. Ahead lay a trail of dark specks, like crumbs after a quarrel between spoons and pots, ending at the tall vise near the window. If the skylight were any clearer, the same beam might broil that iron until it glowed.

Her palms still dusty, she gripped the vise handle and swung it wide open. Beneath the jaws, the cauldron crouched on its side, its black belly exposed to the afternoon glare. Seldom had she studied its battered surface with such deliberate care before in this light. Rings of silver abrasion circled the base, interrupted by a smooth oval the exact size of the missing brass stamp she once thought decorative. Suddenly the shop itself mirrored that blank space: drawers half open, radio casing removed, bulbs unscrewed, everything revealing what time had worn away. She straightened, breathing through the iron tang in the air, and let the absence speak in silence.

She lifted the cauldron onto the bench, but then paused; the metal's shadow flowed across patterns of sawdust she had never registered. A dozen subtler voids became obvious—the stool’s worn seat, the cabinet’s missing knob, an uneven square on the wall where sunlight refracted against exposed primer. Only by tilting her head did she notice the faint outline of two footprints on a rubber mat. Their dust had been blown clean, as if waiting for a returning pair of boots. Her hand found the doorframe, palm resting on the cool wood while the amber beam crept toward the threshold. She lingered, one boot still inside, the other touching the bright afternoon pavement just beyond.
