Every afternoon Tess unlatched the side door of Graybrook Foundry, yet today the latch slipped free without the familiar metallic squeak. A stretch of amber light angled through the doorway, scattering a spectrum of greens and violets across dust motes that hung like slow snow. Heat shimmer rose from the cooling pits, and a lone chain beat a soft rhythm against an iron beam, as though keeping time for work already finished.

She crossed the workshop, boots tapping over flakes of slag. On the supply shelf a bronze moose usually guarded a row of ladles; the small figurine now left a clean rectangle in the soot. Only then did she notice a faint soot trail that curved toward the casting floor. Her gloves already dusty, she followed. A palm-sized critter—perhaps a bold mouse swollen from winter stores—darted from beneath a crate and vanished. Its surprise foray across open ground unsettled a tendril of white smoke at the furnace mouth, the curl drifting sideways before thinning to nothing.

An ingot hoist hung mid-air, its hook still swaying. Were the hook any lower, the mold would scrape the sand, yet no recent pour explained its restless motion. Tess steadied it, then stepped back, uncertain; the chain’s vibration pressed into her fingertips. A row of molds showed fresh pour lines, and in one she spotted a lump inside cooling bronze shaped exactly like the missing moose. Near the rear wall a skylight, long coated with grime, caught the late sun. The glass, now cracked clean by expanding heat, admitted a blade of light that ran straight to the bronze lump, illuminating flecks inside the alloy she had never noticed on earlier shifts. It was the angle of the beam that revealed a second figurine, half-poured months ago, fused to the first and buried in shadow until now. Tess brushed bronze dust from her sleeve, closed the furnace gate more gently than usual, and walked out through the wide door; behind her, the chain settled, leaving only a dim orange blush on the floor.
