The Feather That Drifted Under the Red Lamp-

English 原文
Reed braced his shoulder against the telescope cradle while the dome murmured around him, metal panels wearing a tarnished sheen where countless hands had turned them before. Cold woodland air slid through the open slit and bit at his knuckles. Nowhere on the scarred gear could he see fresh grease, yet the tube had to track a dim cluster edging toward the rim of the eyepiece. Reed—unofficial caregiver of this aging instrument—nudged a control wheel, meaning to nurture its sluggish motion, but the stars still crept away.
Across the floor, Dawn spread star charts on a table blotched with rings of old varnish. Her pencil moved in a generous sweep, circling target after target; a loquacious whisper of catalog numbers slipped from her lips though no answer was required. If the alignment were even a degree off, she warned, the planet’s shadow would vanish before they logged it. Reed half-turned, hesitated, then faced the scope again; his pause left a faint echo in the humming metal, as though the dome could sense indecision.
His fingers still numb, he reached for a slender brass rod kept on a hook beside the ladder. Knuckles numbed by the chill, he levered the rod against the gear’s teeth. Scarcely had the metal flexed when a flake of rust broke free and drifted across the beam of the red lamp, looking momentarily like a miniature eclipse. What stopped him was Dawn’s sudden hush: the image in the eyepiece flowered, then blurred as something pale fluttered through the view. Reed eased the rod back; the dome answered with a slow groan, and the telescope steadied without the expected snap.
Dawn stepped to the ladder and peered through the glass. "The cluster’s gone," she murmured, voice softer than the lamp’s glow. Reed bent to inspect the lens and found a single downy feather clinging to its rim—perhaps shed by an unseen owl that had ridden the dome’s updraft earlier. He brushed it aside; the star field re-formed, ordinary yet precise. Later, as charts were folded and the gears stood quiet, Reed returned to the cradle to lock the wheel. Under the red lamp, a faint white feather lay beside the tripod, catching the dim light like a tiny comet.
