Zola Notices the Eyepiece Groove-

English 原文
Zola sketched a fresh circle on the already crowded star chart, the pencil rasp loud against paper that hid earlier marks beneath a residue of graphite. Beside her, the telescope hummed, its spherical counterweight rocking in micro-motions as the mount tracked an invisible object drifting near the dome’s narrow slit. A knob of polished walnut under her palm stayed warm, absorbing the chill that crept through the metal floor. She flipped the red lamp brighter, spread another transparent overlay, and added a tiny arrow—one more attempt to tame the growing tangle of information. Outside, the urban jungle glittered far below the ridge, a haze of sodium lights muffling weaker stars.
The plan for the night overflowed the notebook margin, every target labeled, each estimate of exposure crossed out and overwritten. Meanwhile, the drive motor purred, the finder scope’s red dot drifted off the plotted spot, and her fingers paused above the control pad. "Fine knob feels smoother tonight," Joel noted from the stairwell, steam from his mug curling in the cold air. Zola replied with a brief clack of pencil against metal, the gesture sharper than speech. The scuffed brass around the eyepiece caught her breath, a shallow groove that posed an unspoken query about all the hurried nights stacked behind this one.
Instead of adding the narrow-band filter she had just uncapped, she set it on the table, its glass winking crimson under the lamp. She turned the fine knob Joel mentioned, easing the mount back until the red dot returned to center and the hum settled into a lower rhythm. The overlay sheets suddenly felt excessive, so she peeled off the top layer, slid it beneath the notebook, and carefully folded the thick notebook shut again. With the clutter thinned, the view through the eyepiece sharpened; the familiar cluster bloomed, its stars pinpricks on velvet, and a tiny dust lane she never noticed before stood out.
A faint owl call slipped through the slit, met by the steady hush of wind brushing the dome’s shell. Joel stopped halfway up the stairs, watching the telescope now gliding without correction, then continued down toward the kettle again, footsteps ringing once, twice, then fading. Zola stayed still, one eye dark-adapted against the brass, while the brass stayed still against the slow turning of the planet. Outside, constellations migrated across the great black river, indifferent to the brief touch of any guiding hand.
