English 原文
The sour tang of chilled iron settled on Ben's tongue the instant he nudged the observatory door inward. He had crossed this threshold on many nights, yet the hinge today rasped longer, a drawn breath snagging on rust. Slim amber light from a solitary candelabra trembled across the floor, unveiling patches where lacquer had flaked into dull islands. Star charts splayed under the lamp showed curled corners, graphite rings smeared by moisture that crept through the open slit above. Ben pressed a boot heel on the grating; the echo rose, then faded into still air. Only then did the cold reach his jaw, and his hand closed tighter around the telescope’s chilled focus knob.
He set his field notebook beside the eyepiece, its cover mottled from years of fingerprints that silver polish could never erase. Seldom had the brass rim encircling the lens looked so dull; a faint green bloom mapped where fingers once turned it briskly. Gloves pulled higher, he tried rotating the assembly, yet grit lodged in the track slowed every millimeter, the dome answering with a reluctant groan. As the slit drifted past Saturn's pale smear, Ben compared the sky’s motion to the stuttering gear beside him. It was the mismatch between silent heavens and labored mechanism that made him set the brake and trace the worn teeth. Graphite crumbled, dusting the metal like accidental garnish, and drifted onto the red lamp’s glass.
A sudden rustle stirred inside the storage drawer beneath the platform, softer than the gears yet sharper than the wind outside. Ben lowered himself, knees clicking against steel, and lifted the panel; a dormouse blinked up from a nest of shredded lens tissue. Between its paws rested a crumb of hard bread speckled with thyme, the herb’s scent oddly bright amid oil and dust. Ben’s hand stopped mid-reach, hover turning into a slow retreat that left the tiny creature undisturbed. The mouse resumed its silent feast, whiskers twitching with concentration that rivalled any lecture he had heard on culinary art downstairs in the canteen. Steam pipes there once carried aromas of stewed vegetables, but the distilled smell of thyme inside the dome felt wilder, less prepared.
Keeping the planet in frame required the dome to rotate, yet Ben waited, palm resting on the cold rail as though the floor were glass beneath him. A minute passed; the star drifted beyond the slit, and the tiny animal’s nibbling crackle replaced the usual tick of gears. Ben eased the brake, rolled the dome farther east, and left a corner of the sky for the dormouse alone. Notebook closed, candelabra wick pinched, he let the red lamp glow linger, projecting faint islands of warmth across the worn charts. The sour tang of chilled iron followed him down the stairs, tasting now of quiet bread and unscheduled company.
