English 原文

Every morning Vance waded through the knee-deep shallows, his bamboo pole tapping the coral like a metronome while he noted the water’s height against its notches. Today the pole slipped by a finger’s width, yet the current pressed lighter than usual, as though the lagoon stalled mid-breath. He paused, let sand swirl around his ankles, and lifted the rod once more; the worn green surface no longer sat upright but leaned a degree west, an angle so slight it almost escaped notice.

Seldom had the tide sounded so thin. The usual thrum under the surface rose to a higher pitch, echoing along the reef’s hollows. A translucent squid drifted past, its fins pulsing in steady oscillation; nearer the bottom, an octopus settled inside a broken shell, one arm testing the groove as if measuring it. His ankle still wet, he stepped onto a coral shelf and advanced, moving as though the floor were glass, careful not to snap any living branch beneath his weight.

Ahead, a narrow trench cut through the coral like a miniature fjord, walls sheer and pale where fresh growth had not yet darkened. He halted midway, shifted the pole to his other hand, then reversed two steps when the shelf flexed underfoot. What caught his eye was a faint seam of new calcium, bright against the older rock. Minute bubbles escaped from the ridge, each burst giving the water a soft hiss. He crouched, laid the pole along the trench, and watched; grain by grain, the colony had accumulated around the bamboo, clasping it in patient layers, levering it ever so gently until today’s subtle tilt became visible.

Vance traced the crust with his thumb, then straightened, leaving the pole where it lay. Behind him the squid vanished into deeper shade, and the octopus recoiled farther into its borrowed shell. He turned toward shore, water lapping against his calves in slow pulses, each surge nudging the tilted bamboo at his back.
