Steam over Amber-

English 原文
A damp heat hugged the benches, and the sharp scent of warming resin pressed against Ian’s throat as he stepped into the amber-polishing workshop. One stool beside the lathe remained pushed back, its cushion still carrying the shallow imprint of a body that had not returned; he set his own tools on the nearer surface, leaving that gap untouched. From the street beyond the open skylight drifted a brief pandemonium of bicycle bells and children’s shouts, then the door clicked shut behind him, sealing the room in quiet warmth.
He propped a cloudy lump of amber beneath the first strip of coarse sandpaper. Seldom had the ancient resin offered up its heart without resistance, and grit rasped over it like dry leaves on slate. A ribbon of pine-scented vapour curled upward, carrying an odd elation that seemed to float between ceiling beams, weightless yet undeniable. Kira arrived, wiped condensation from the magnifying glass, and laid out finer papers; what slowed her was the empty apron still swinging on its hook. Ian tried to persuade her to begin the smoothing passes while he steadied the lathe, yet she hovered, folding and unfolding a cloth until the motion lost rhythm.
His craft depended on even pressure, so he fetched a wooden wedge and pressed it between the vise jaws to stop a chatter that threatened to mar the surface. Were the wedge a fraction thinner, the stone would have slipped, and the thought tightened his grip. Just then the cooling bucket tipped from its perch—its rope handle had twisted loose—sending water across the hot wheel. Steam burst upward; tools clattered as metal met floor, and for a breath they stood inside a cloud that tasted of rain on scorched pine. Ian jerked back, sleeve moist, heart pacing the hiss, while Kira stepped sideways, shielding the freshly cut sheets from the spray.
Water settled in shallow puddles, the hiss faded, and the amber remained clamped, warmer than before yet unscarred. Kira passed him the next-finer paper without a word; her fingers brushed his, cold against his flushed skin. What shone beneath the glass now was a single suspended wing, its veins delicate as frost traced on a window. The second stool stayed empty, untouched by the commotion, and a gentler heat rose once more from the wheel, folding around the vacancy like breath that never quite found another pair of lungs.
