English 原文
The sharp green bite of crushed stem hung in the air, prickling the nose before any other fragrance could crowd in. Beneath that note, a faint glossy trail curved across the marble counter, a quiet clue between scattered droppers and a brass scale. Ada brushed a sleeve over her forearm, fingertips grazing the tacky line; the surface resisted, then released with a tiny snap. Felix, already jotting ratios in a leather-spined notebook, tapped his pen twice. A pinpoint of ink pooled beside the margin where his pause lingered. Rarely had the workshop carried such silence at midday, sunlight pooling on glass stoppers while unseen essences drifted upward and vanished.
She slid the brass pan onto the scale, expecting its smooth swing to settle at zero. Instead, the needle stuck halfway, nudged outward by a dark plaque of resin that had set along the rim. What delayed them was the small plaque of resin hardened on the scale. Ada nudged it with a wooden spatula, the edge skimming the grain, yet the mass clung stubbornly, too brittle to wipe, too soft to chip free. Felix unscrewed a stopper and let two slow drops of bergamot fall, but the pan tilted unevenly, numbers floating uselessly above the baseline. After three uneasy tries, Ada set the spatula down, rolled her shoulders, and turned from the bench with more force than intended.
A row of potted yucca guarded the tall window, their leathery blades glinting under the glare. Ada lifted the tin watering can, its rim cool against her palm, and tipped a slow arc into the nearest pot. The soil darkened, released a damp, earthy sigh, and a bead overflowed, sliding across the sill. That bead struck the forgotten trail on the counter, thinning the sticky sheen. An unexpected breath of juniper burst free, strong enough to reverberate through the subtler florals that lingered in the room. Ada froze, can suspended, elbow bent; the way the scent leaped felt familiar, yet unplaced. With measured care, she stepped toward the bench, her other hand settling flat, as though preserving the sanctity of that hush.
The diluted trail now glimmered like fresh varnish, pointing toward a squat bottle half-hidden behind thicker flacons. Ada pinched its neck; resin glued stopper to glass, and for a moment her grip slackened, a pause balanced between care and risk. Felix shifted beside her, yet said nothing. Were the stopper looser, the bottle would have rolled beneath her fingers; instead it yielded only after she twisted a strip of linen for purchase. Seal broken, she raised the opened vial close to her face. Her spine straightened in quiet veneration of the aroma that uncoiled—green at first, then woody, then smoke fading to whisper. Her thumb pressed the loosened stopper into place, and the thin scent reverberated once more against the dark glass.
