English 原文
A faint copper tang met Tara's tongue the moment she leaned over the wicker rim. "Where did that flavor come from?" The patchwork fields below once offered mellow sweetness, like hay cooled in a long attic. Now an aftertaste of coins lingered with every breath, and the change pressed a silent question against her teeth. She steadied the basket floor with one boot and scanned the burner pipes, expecting soot, finding only a thin white crust where steam had dried after last night’s torrential rain. Rarely had the envelope above glowed so dimly, its orange skin the colour of weak tea instead of flame.
Her tongue still coated with the copper memory, she knelt to test a coil of rope that crossed the corner like dry licorice. The usual rite of pinching each knot between fingers felt different; rough fibres flaked, leaving a chalky bitterness that she tasted when she licked the edge of her thumb. What caught her attention was the faint warp in the wicker beneath the valve ropes. Repeated landings had pressed that corner against sodden earth during the dawn deluge, and the weave now yielded under her palm with a sandy squeak. As though the ropes were threads of sugar, she tasted imagined sweetness yet met only dust.
She reached for the water flask, hoping to quench the metallic taste, but paused midway when the burner hissed once and fell silent. Silence stretched through the basket, thicker than warm syrup on toast left to drip. The bell from the valley arrived blurred, its resolution smeared like butter across a too-soft crust. Cooler air slipped into the envelope, and the basket dipped, stirring crumbs of sand that carried a bitter suggestion of clay onto her lips. Her fingertips brushed the vent cord, then withdrew; the sudden memory of the cord snapping once before salted her tongue.
The flask stayed closed beside her boot, water sloshing inside with quiet promise still. She traced a hidden strip of fabric stitched along the inner rim; its dye, once crimson, had bled into a pale lemon she had never noticed. That colour, mingling with the copper taste in her mouth, spelled no danger, yet it announced the long, slow seep of days more clearly than any clock. She breathed out, and the burner chose that moment to flare, a brief orange tongue licking upward before shrinking like a candle about to die. Her hand touched the vent cord again; lemon and metal balanced on her palate while she stood, neither rising nor sinking. Below, puddles from the forgotten deluge flashed silver; she tasted their distant salt and waited for her next breath.
