English 原文
Stepping through the vinyl flap that separated the queue from the arena, Heath set a foot on the metal deck and listened to the first sigh of rubber against floor. A quilt of old collisions textured every surface: the red bumper nearest the entrance showed worn streaks where blue paint had rubbed away, and the padded wall bore overlapping crescents, each faded differently, each a date the room kept without numbers. Low along the barrier, a mural stretched—an evergreen thicket shaken by perpetual wind, a cartoon squirrel swinging in a striped hammock, both half-obscured by years of shoe scuffs. Sparks skipped across the overhead grid in bright pulses, and for a moment the whole scene glimmered as though the floor were a calm pond catching lightning.
Heath strode to a fire-engine car whose shell gleamed beneath the patina, certain that its speed would match its color. The steering wheel spun freely when he tested it; that looseness pleased him, promised tight turns. Rarely had the ceiling sparks traced such restless zigzags, yet he took the pattern as applause. Two bumps of the pedal, and the car began a neat arc—until a taxi-yellow vehicle drifted from the side, nudged him, then lingered parallel. Flora sat inside, one hand light on her own wheel, the other adjusting mismatched goggles that looked rescued from a workshop shelf. “Room?” she asked, but the bass beat drowned the word; only her raised eyebrow conveyed the offer.
Heath tried to pivot away; the wheel spun, but the rear wheels bit late, sending him into a sluggish half-circle. The red shell kissed the padded wall with a dull pop, and the pole lost contact for a breath, killing power. Wall paint peeled where he touched, exposing earlier layers—sunset orange beneath arena green—evidence of age he had ignored. Flora reversed, angled her bumper against his, and restored momentum with a gentle shove. What caught him off guard was how lightly the shared jolt redirected both cars, her assistance neither victory nor rescue but a simple exchange of motion. His plan of solitary speed frayed like varnish under constant shoes.
His hands still buzzing, he released the pedal and let the car idle. Around him, collisions continued, yet their rhythm no longer resembled contest; it sounded instead like rain on distant roofing, scattershot, indifferent. He glanced once at the entrance flap, now fluttering in the draft of passing cars, the same sheet he had pushed aside minutes earlier. A single spark landed on the ceiling mesh above it, lingered, then dimmed, leaving only the mural’s hammock swaying in painted wind.
