The Vacant Bumper Car Bay-

English 原文
A single bumper car bay stood vacant; its contact pole leaned outward like a question mark against the glowing ceiling grid. Kestrel stepped through the archway, shoes skimming the polished metal that vibrated with distant collisions. The missing shell left a neat rectangle of untouched floor, dusted only by drifting reflections from blue-white sparks. Where pairs of cars usually clustered, the gap yawned wide, so every nearby driver corrected course to dodge the nothingness. An attendant reorganised the idle queue rails along the barrier, yet the vacancy under the hanging pole lingered, oddly magnetic. Kestrel rubbed a palm along the smooth bumper of a fire-engine red car and measured how the emptiness disrupted the ring.
He swung into the seat, the smooth plastic backrest still warm where the last rider had pressed against it. The steering wheel spun freely under his fingers, and the motor hummed through the metal floorboards. Harriet coasted over in an ocean blue shell, brakes squealing the tiniest complaint as her bumper kissed his at an angle. "Want to nudge that gap closed?" she called, the music swallowing half her words. He tapped the pedal; the car lurched, but the empty bay swallowed momentum, and he drifted sideways instead of forward. Both friends laughed when the wheel over-rotated, spinning his chassis until sparks painted a quick mosaic across the mirrored floor.
Kestrel braked, shoulders tensing as his car stopped inches short of the barrier, the vacant square still untouched behind him. He shifted into a brief crouch beside the seat, palm testing the wheel’s slack play. A thin strip of rubber had curled away from a support roller, denying traction whenever he aimed straight. Harriet eased alongside, her bumper pressing lightly, creating just enough resistance for his wheels to bite. Together they feathered pedals, the cars meshing like two gears until the red shell pointed precisely toward the gap. The red shell nudged the rectangle, bumper compressing, then elastic spring pushed it out again, and the vacancy settled back into place untouched.
Sparks dimmed between beats of the music, and the tilted pole above the bay swayed gently, unchanged. Kestrel coasted past, wheel steady now, yet the hollow square behind the reorganised rails waited, smooth and available. Harriet signalled a wide arc; both cars merged with the swirling traffic, their bumpers still warm from the failed repair. Behind them, the vacant patch glowed faintly under a fresh cascade of sparks, metal surface trembling like a penny on taut drumskin. Somewhere beyond the archway, a bell announced the next dining crowd, its echo bouncing across the metal floor and then slipping out through the rubber gate.
