English 原文
Cal unlatched the low gate and stepped onto the damp grass of the hillside station. He had walked this path countless mornings, yet the clearing stretched ahead with an unfamiliar hush. The cedar hut stood where it always had, louvered walls catching pale light, while the anemometer cups turned lazily above the fence. His boots sank a little deeper than usual; overnight moisture lingered in the soil, and the smell of wet hay drifted up from the valley. Seldom had the cedar panels looked so blotched with mildew. Even the white paint on the Stevenson screen showed a faint peel along one edge, as though quiet hands had pulled at it during the night.
He crossed the clearing, shoulder brushing a loose batten that tapped the hut's eave each time the breeze shifted. Were the hinge a shade looser, the door would swing shut by itself, yet today it resisted and stuck halfway; swollen grain rasped against the jamb until a firm shove set it free. Inside, the copper conduit that carried the anemometer wire curved toward the desk, its surface now mottled green where the last tempest had driven rain through the doorway. The logbook lay open, graphite strokes still sharp, but scattered pine needles striped the page—a sign of wind that slipped between the slats while no one watched.
He raised the small torch, expecting the familiar glint from the mercury column; instead, the beam caught a shallow groove along the screen's lower frame. His glove still damp, he traced the mark, then paused at the threshold of a thought. Another groove waited on the fence post, and a third lined the gate. Together they formed a low arc that pointed toward the stone footing under the arch. What stopped him was the granite keystone itself, darker than its neighbours, water stains fanning outward like spokes. The pattern offered no clear insight, only a suggestion that water, wind, and time had conspired along an unnoticed path.
He closed the torch beam and stepped back, eyes adjusting to soft daylight. Beyond the arch, grass bent away in a faint channel, as though each storm still remembered that hidden course. A low click sounded inside the hut; the barograph needle pressed deeper into its paper drum, printing a steeper slope. Cal lingered beside the gate, one hand resting on the cool granite, the other on the latch that remained half lifted. Somewhere above, the vane ticked twice, then settled. He watched the grass tremble once more, undecided whether to follow the line downhill or return to the waiting logbook.
