English 原文
"Scratch under the booth," Clara said. She knelt, tracing the pale groove with her fingertip. Overhead pendant bulbs threw flat glare on the laminate floor. The thin mark ran from the table leg toward the aisle like a silver thread catching each splash of light. A grey cat lounged near the kitchen doorway, its ears pivoting as servers pushed through the swinging panel. Each push released a shaft of brightness from the sizzling back room. Clara slid farther beneath the seat, boots squeaking where crumbs gleamed. The groove ended at a tiny metallic glint wedged beside the wall. She pinched the object, but the narrow gap squeezed her knuckles. The effort stalled when a tray of plates rattled past, shadows fluttering over her hands.
She waited until the aisle cleared, then tried again. Her second endeavor involved a folded napkin to pad her grip. The object hardly moved; only its gleam shifted as she tugged. At the bar counter a tired researcher reviewed notes under a desk lamp, glasses shining in concentrated glow. The cat padded closer, nose twitching toward the trapped speck. Its whiskers caught the pendant light, drawing thin silhouettes across the floorboards etched by lifelong chair scuffs. Clara eased the booth bench outward by a finger-width; wood groaned and a deeper shadow opened. The cat slipped its paw inside first, nudging the object free. It skittered into open light—a small ring shaped like a leaf, painted an envious green and dotted with chipped gold. Clara assumed it was a fallen ornament from someone’s jacket.
Before she could pocket the leaf, the cat clamped the ring gently between its teeth and trotted toward the outdoor patio edge. Clara followed until daylight met the brighter doorway. In the new beam she spotted a thin leather collar under the cat’s fur, torn where a ring had once hung. She crouched, tilted the leaf into the sunlit strip, and noticed a loop on its back still carrying a sliver of leather. The scratch now made sense; every trip beneath the booth had dragged the metal along the floor. She stayed beside the doorway and tapped a finger on the floor. When the cat approached, she clipped the leaf back onto the collar’s split ring. The cat bounded toward the railing, and a faint clatter of dishes trembled in the background.
