English 原文
The floor path arrows shone white, but a damp fin-shaped mark broke their neat line. Ruby let her knees bend, ankles rolling forward. She could examine the dark outline without blocking the stream of visitors behind her. She had drifted out from the bright lobby only seconds earlier. The observation tunnel’s curved glass already draped a blue haze across her arms. Pumps hummed through the flooring; the vibration tickled her soles and kept her balance lively. A sting of salt lingered near her nostrils while bubbles rose overhead like upside-down rain. As she straightened, calf muscles tightened. The fin print still pointed toward the touch pool area, not toward the elevated auditorium where the feeding show would begin. Footsteps brushed past her hips, yet no one else paused.
Ruby aimed for a clear space along the rope line that framed the auditorium platform. With eight minutes left before the feeding session, a spot would let her see the divers drop food through the water column. She threaded her shoulders sideways between a stroller and a group of teenagers. Her progress slowed when the path narrowed beside the jellyfish corridor. The damp fin mark reappeared on the floor, now lighter, as if water had evaporated during her delay. She hesitated, weight rocking from heels to toes. If she had pressed deeper into the tightening crowd, the imprint would have blended into scuffed shoe varnish. Instead, she followed the ghostly trail toward the bench at the large tank. The magnifying glass fixed to the chain hung there, swinging with each pulse of the filtration current. She crouched, quads burning, and lifted the lens toward the glass.
Through the circle of glass, a pale shape slid under a ledge. It was not a ray at all. A horseshoe crab, no larger than her palm, crept along the sand, joints lifting like slow gears. The arc of its shell matched the smear on the walkway. Earlier, a keeper had lifted the creature, letting seawater drip and stamp the floor. The tiny crawler moved with measured force, a living descendant of armored giants that roamed ancient seas. Ruby eased the magnifying glass back to the chain, feeling tension fade from her thighs. She placed her palm on the cool glass as the crab continued its patient crawl across the gravel.
