A faint hiss rolled from the spinach nozzles, echoing under the high ceiling. Max guided a silver cart past the spray while a sparrow fluttered above the hanging scales, wings beating in quick bursts. He and Uma had planned to pick six peaches—soft enough to blend today—before moving on. Under the fluorescent cast, a heap of fruit gleamed pale gold; each piece might ripen fully by evening. A wise elder in a grey shawl compared stems of mint that an herbalist in a green apron had just arranged. Chilled air drifted from a nearby cooler, ready to transform any soft peach into something firmer, yet for the moment abundance filled the crate.

Moments later the scene shifted. A staff trolley blocked one side of the display, and children scooped fruit into small baskets; the mound shrank. The sparrow swooped lower, stirring the price cards, and the cart’s stiff wheel dragged at every turn. By the time Max and Uma reached the weighing station, only three nearly-ripe peaches remained, and a slow queue curled round the counter. The scale printed one narrow label before its paper roll stalled, core exposed. Max appreciated the chance to improvise. He chose two peaches—just enough for a single bottle—leaving the last fruit for anyone behind. Uma pressed the lonely sticker onto their thin bag, and they steered the squeaky cart toward the dairy aisle as mist drifted over the emptied crate.

Near the exit, glass freezer doors showed faint frost along each edge, and pale light shimmered across the tiles. Compressors hummed beside distant self-checkout beeps. Above, the sparrow perched on a rail, head tilted toward the vacant peach tray. Light touched its grey feathers, and the bird flicked its wings before sliding into another aisle.
