English 原文
A dull thunk echoed each time the rope bucket tapped the trunk, the sound bouncing through blue-grey leaves that flashed when fickle gusts rolled overhead. On the branch junction two metres up, Sage knelt on planks still dark with dew. The tape measure, pale and reflective, sagged between the branches while the tree swayed. She had already hauled one long board from the ground; its edges were smooth, the surface faintly cool. Yet when she tried to slide it across the widening gap, a knot in the nearer limb deflected the first nail, bending it. She breathed out, eased the nail free, and searched for softer grain, half listening to her neighbor’s lawnmower rising and falling beyond the fence.
A sharp whistle broke the rhythm. The neighbor called from the gate, holding a wayward football. Sage’s parent on the grass waved for her to come down and unlock the side gate. She climbed the rope ladder, boots brushing against the chrome-toned rungs, then crossed the yard to wrangle the latch. The delay was brief, yet wind kept working. By the time she returned, the sun had shifted; sap beads along the trunk caught the light in tiny luminous points. More important, the branches no longer leaned together. The gap beneath the waiting board looked a palm wider, and the plank now floated above empty air.
Nina had reached the platform as well, carrying a spare length of rope over one shoulder. Without a word they threaded the rope under the board and around the trunk, pulling in opposite directions until the wood kissed both limbs. The rope’s fibers groaned, then held. Sage hammered fresh nails where the grain ran straight, and Nina steadied each strike, their hands moving in practiced sequence whenever the wind paused. A last gust rattled leaves overhead, but the board stayed firm, its silver edge level with the older planks. The bucket that had drummed against the trunk in the morning now hung quiet beside the ladder, rope coiled twice around its handle while a single drop of sap slid down the rim.
