Heat Under the Leaves-

English 原文
Hammer taps bounced across the planks, and Jonas’s sleeve brushed the bark with a rough hiss while Olive pulled up the rope ladder. She joined him at the branch junction, the spot where creaks gathered like slow drums whenever the wind rolled through the leaves. A narrow plank waited in the swinging bucket below; the bucket kept knocking the trunk with a dull bump each time the rope twisted. Their goal was clear: span the open gap toward the extended branch end before lunchtime. The plank had been measured earlier, yet another gust widened the branch angle, so its nose now reached only partway. Olive murmured a short laugh, lifted the tape again, and the metal strip rang softly against the grain. Her small terrier companion whined under the platform, the sound rising through the board gaps as steady as a kettle beginning to boil.
A sudden clang from the toolbox lid cut the rhythm. The dog’s paw had nudged it, and the metallic clap echoed off the trunk. Olive climbed down to free the leash that had tangled around a root, leaving Jonas above. During her absence, midday sunlight found the tin of herbal remedy—wax, mint leaves, and oil—resting on a warm plank near the tool-hoisting point. The mixture softened, slid under its loose lid, and dripped onto the hoisting rope. The rope glaze grew slick; every drip made a faint patter on the metal bucket. Heat continued its quiet work: the coated rope lost grip, the bucket turned, and an oyster she had tucked inside rolled against a hollow shell she wanted for decoration, setting off a muffled rattle that no one heard from the ground.
Olive returned, wiped sweat from her forehead, and noticed the rope shining like wet glass. She wrapped a rag around the line, leaned her weight back, and looped the freed end twice around a thicker knob of bark to halt the spin. Jonas steadied the plank, and together they eased it onto the supports, accepting the shorter reach and planning to add a spacer board later. Neither of them looked toward the peg by the trunk where an old park ranger hat hung; a thin thread of melted balm kept creeping along the underside of the branch toward its brim.
