Water shot through the narrow gap where Nell’s smooth stone had been, spinning loose pebbles along the blue-grey creek bed. She crouched on the clay ledge, boots pressing faint prints into the damp surface, and scanned the translucent water for the runaway piece. Dad read on a blanket a few steps back, next to a half-eaten croissant whose flaky pastry layers broke into silver flakes whenever the light breeze crossed it. A fennel seed bounced from the crust, drifted onto the current, and slid downstream like a tiny boat. Nell wanted the dam to hold; every new stone pushed the glassy sheet upstream higher, and she hoped the spreading pool would let small minnows glide through. Grey knelt beside her, lifting a slab of frost-white shale from the bank wall. The rock had been pressed between layers like pages, and its thin edge looked perfect for wedging.

Together they braced the shale across the remaining gap. The water’s force rose up behind it, forcing icy ribbons through any pinhole they missed. One jet scoured sand from beneath their structure; the shift loosened a rounded support stone, which rolled away and nudged Nell’s backpack from yesterday’s field trip toward the brink. Grey caught the strap, but the short delay let a finger-wide stream escape around the far side, carving a channel through soft clay. If that slit widened, the whole effort could crumble, so Grey slid a branch from the driftwood pile and pressed it across the leak. The branch alone wobbled, yet, wedged against the shale, it formed a silent brace, and the runaway water thinned to a silvery thread. Upstream, ripples flattened into a mirror. Downstream, pebbles continued to rattle under the controlled spill.

At the same moment, Dad turned a page, and a shard of reflected light skimmed across the creek. A fresh ribbon of water curved around the shale brace, racing toward the shadowed riffle below.
