"Too wide."

Forrest tilted a flat shale slab toward the accelerating water between two steel-grey boulders, blue rubber boots planted on the bank. Dad paged through a magazine on the blanket a few steps behind, sandals crossed and unmoving. Cold spray spotted Forrest’s sleeves as he tried sliding the slab edge-first, but the current pushed harder. A round knob on the stone caught briefly, then slipped, and the slab lurched sideways. Before he could grip it again, water rolled the slab downstream, leaving the gap humming louder. Forrest’s fingers tightened; the cool sensation lingered where the shale had scraped his palms.

He stepped back along the clay bank, where fine threads of grass roots webbed through frost-white soil. Pale sky reflected on the shallow sheet upstream, and sunlight broke into silver flecks that drifted across his boots. He knelt, packed a fist of damp clay, and noticed thin pebbles emerge from the bank as water seeped away. Each handful pressed between his palms flattened like wax beginning to melt under slow pressure. He lined the clay into narrow cracks along the left rock, yet the stream peeled strips off within seconds. Moving farther, he tugged a branch from the driftwood pile; the outer twigs had withered until they snapped like dry spaghetti. He tried wedging its thicker end across the gap, but the current dragged the branch sideways before it caught anywhere. If water kept eroding the clay, the afternoon shadow would cross the creek long before anything stayed in place.

While he studied the collapsing branch, something tapped his boot and rolled into the shallows beside him. The shale slab had returned, carried by a lazy eddy that circled behind the driftwood pile. Its round knob now pointed upward like a small handle, scratched but still intact. Without crouching this time, Forrest gripped the knob, turned the slab sideways, and let the current press its wide face flat. The gap had been narrowed by his earlier clay lining. Because of that, the stone slid deeper and stayed, water streaming over its top edge. Forrest kept one palm on the cool surface, fingers spaced for balance, while his other hand was reaching for an extra pebble.

「太寬了。」

他退到黏土岸邊，細密的草根像銀白線條穿梭在冷土中。淺灘上空的天空映在水面，陽光碎裂成銀點漂過他的靴面。他跪下，捏起一把濕黏土，水滲走時細小卵石從岸壁浮現。每把黏土在掌間被壓平成蠟般緩慢融化的薄片。他把黏土嵌進左側岩石的細縫，可水流幾秒內就剝走黏土條。他又走到漂流木堆，拉出一根樹枝；外層枯枝已脆裂如乾麵條。他嘗試把較粗的一端橫塞縫口，但水勢把枝條側拖，哪裡都卡不住。若水繼續沖刷黏土，午後陰影落到溪面前恐怕什麼都留不下。

他正研究那根快散架的枝條時，一物碰了下他的靴子，滾到淺水旁。那塊頁岩板被後方的緩流帶回來了。圓凸如小握把般朝上，雖有刮痕仍完好。這次佛瑞斯特沒再蹲低，他握住凸點，將石板橫轉，讓水流把寬面壓平進縫。早先的黏土已縮小了缺口。因為如此，石板滑得更深，停住後水從頂邊流過。佛瑞斯特一隻手貼著冰涼的石面、手指分開維持平衡，而另一隻手正伸去抓一顆額外的卵石。
