Her thumb grazed the worn edge of her travel card, the laminate cool and grainy. Engine vibration from a bus idling outside pulsed through the tiled floor into her shoes. Two chrome rails curved like open arms around the ticket passage. The card had been topped up during lunch, so confidence warmed her palm. She pressed the rectangle against the sensor and waited. Warm plastic kissed smooth glass, yet the panel stayed dark. A dull buzz, not the cheerful beep, crawled through her fingers, and the barrier stayed fixed. Brief camaraderie flickered in the queue as a backpack brushed her elbow, making space. Ruby drew back the card and watched the red light fade.

After the light died, she counted two slow breaths before tapping again. Edge first, the chipped corner brushed the glass, then the flat surface followed. A steady green flash finally answered the second tap, bright against the smoked surface. Rubber panels parted without noise, greeting her quick step with open arms. At that same breath, relays snapped overhead as the orange display updated: Route 17 now at Platform 4 beyond the footbridge. Her cloth penguin companion bounced inside the bag on her hip while she turned toward the stairs. Station clatter thickened into an immersive quilt of tapping heels, rattling wheels, and faint brake squeals.

She crossed the footbridge, metal treads harsh under her soles, and kept her stride even. If the green countdown reached zero first, she would wait fifteen minutes, yet she refused to rush. Passengers already queuing on Platform 4 shuffled forward; padded coats brushed her sleeve, then stilled. Ruby joined the line just as the bus doors vented a hiss and slid wide. Sound lingered after the shuffle ceased—a low hum rolling through hollow rails beneath her feet.

燈號暗掉後，她深吸兩口氣再度感應。先用缺角的一邊輕擦玻璃，再平放整張卡。第二次接觸終於得到穩定的綠光，亮在煙色面板上。橡膠翼門無聲展開，像張開手臂迎接她。幾乎同時，上方繼電器清脆一響，橘色顯示器更新：17 號線改在天橋另一端的 4 月台。她腰間包包裡的布製企鵝旅伴跟著跳動，她立即轉身奔向樓梯。車站的敲擊聲、輪子碰撞聲、遠處的剎車聲交織成包覆感極強的音幕。
