Damp bark pressed against Iris’s palm as she pushed through a curtain of low branches on the outdoor trail. She and Bram kept a brisk stroll because the volunteer had announced that the observation tower would reopen for a ten-minute window, and they wanted to take part before their bus departed. Above the treetops the square platform loomed, its railing catching afternoon light like copper wire. A pine trunk, freshly cut and still oozing amber sap, blocked the bark-chip path. Its length filled the width of the trail, and its weight was obvious from the way the chips sank beneath it. Iris braced both feet and tried rolling it aside; rough knots scraped her sleeves, yet the trunk barely shifted.

They left it for the moment and reached the stream footbridge, only to find a missing plank that left a gap wider than a single stride. Wind tugged at their jackets, and the cliff beyond the meadow brightened under late sun, reminding them of their spring tradition—spotting the first cliff swallows through the tower telescope. Bram’s gaze moved back to the stranded trunk. Its straight sides and heavy mass, troublesome a minute earlier, now offered exactly the span required. Together they rolled the trunk along the path, let gravity carry its nose onto the bridge edge, and tipped it forward. The weight wedged firmly against the opposite beam, forming a steady beam across the gap. One at a time they crossed, boot soles thudding on the resinous surface. When they climbed the tower stairs, the gate swung open and the volunteer smiled at the improvised solution without a word. Sunlight coloured the meadow in ochre bands, and distant specks wheeled near the cliff face. Behind them, two muddy footprints darkened the sticky pine bark by the bridge opening.
