Morning glare bounced off a wet patch on its curved shell while shadow pooled beneath the ivy trailing along the fence. A low scrape rose when she nudged the stone; its grainy surface cooled her palm. Half in brightness, a long branch lay on the dark mulch, bark rough and dry. Near the fork where Ivan measured the planting hole, a folded sheet showing an old strategic plan for the garden lay ignored; its sharp creases caught thin lines of reflected-gleam, but the branch’s promise of leverage drew Gwen’s attention instead.

She slid the branch beside the stone and set a fist-sized rock under it as a fulcrum. The first push offered only a jumpstart; the stone tipped a finger’s width, then slumped back, leaving a brighter stripe of soil in the sun. She scraped more earth away, added a flatter rock, and pressed again. The branch flexed, wood squealing in the dim air, yet the stone rolled another handspan. Pebbles spilled from the gap like a tiny bonanza, each speck flashing when stray light struck. Still, the space stayed too narrow for the trowel Ivan had placed nearby.

At the path edge, windfall apples lay in dappled shadow beneath the tree; among them Gwen found a broad slab of concrete. She lugged it back, wedged it beneath the lever, and leaned her weight forward. A dull groan rose, then, in one sudden shift, the stone rolled free, shadow sliding away from the newly lit cavity. Inside, rather than bare earth, a ring of chipped tiles gleamed—part of a forgotten birdbath, not an ordinary boulder. Gwen crouched, tracing the patterned edge with the trowel tip, already weighing bulb positions for spring. She lifted the stone toward the fence again, unaware that a loosened strand of ivy now tilted slowly toward the brightness at her back.
